Throughout my essay’s I have run into having an issue with comma splices. I have a fear of fragments so to avoid one grammatical error, I make another. Often times there are several run-ons in my essays. I do not catch on to my errors in my reading, mainly because I was not completely sure what a comma splice was. Now I know that a comma splice is two independent clauses fused together with a comma. To fix this you can use a period, semi-colon, or a subjunctive word. To teach the class on how to avoid comma splices Lindsey Beaulieu and I made a slideshow presentation and a Kahoot. (This is the link for the Slide show presentation)The slideshow presentation gives an explanation of what a comma splice is. The information on what a comma splice is we got from The Little Seagull textbook. Then it goes on to give examples of a comma splice, and how to fix it. One of the examples of a comma splice we used is, “I went to the store, I bought milk.” To fix this you could say a variation of three things, “I went to the store. I bought milk.” Or, “I went to the store, and I bought milk.” And also, “I went to the store; I bought milk.” Any of those three examples fix the comma splice. To make sure the audience remembers the lesson we taught, we included a Kahoot at the end. (To view our Kahoot, this is the link: https://play.kahoot.it/#/k/076e45fb-d899-4c89-8c71-c7352b70d3da.) Kahoot is a quiz-website. In order to take the quiz, you must go to kahoot on your phone and enter a code, which we will have the class do. There are a few questions on our multiple-choice quiz. One question asks for the definition of a comma splice, while the others ask which one of the following is a comma splice. Whoever gets the highest score will get a prize, which in this case is a rice krispee treat. Creating this lesson has made me grasp a full understanding of what a comma splice is. Before I had a difficult time spotting them, however, while writing my current essay I have been able to stop myself from having comma splices in my essay. This will hopefully lead to me getting a better grade on this essay because I had a terrible habit of comma splices in my last few essays. Not only will this lesson help me, but hopefully it will teach my fellow classmates on what a comma splice is and how to avoid it. With plenty of examples in our slideshow, and testing their knowledge through our kahoot, Lindsey and I have hopefully made our class aware of comma splices. This grammar lesson will hopefully improve the classes grammar skills and lead us to be better writers.
